Last week, the world was shocked to learn that Dolly Parton, iconic singer and songwriter and humanitarian passed away. Learning of Dolly’ death reminded me of a lesson plan I created and shared many time with my students. As we mourn Dolly and our children are hearing much about her on the news, you might want to share this with your own children. If you are under time constraints, break these steps into one or two sittings, but don’t let too much time lapse.
- Gather copies of The Rag Coat by Lauren Mills and Coat of Many Colors by Dolly Parton. You can also find audio versions of these books on You Tube. Also, find a recording of Dolly Parton’s song, Coat of Many Colors.
- Provide background knowledge: Spend a few minutes explaining Dolly Parton’s poor background and her rise to stardom. Also, explain “quilting” and show an example of a quilt.
- Read or listen to The Rag Coat by Lauren Mills.
Although this is a sad book in part, it lends itself to slow reading and rich discussion in several places. Take the time to do that.
- Next, read or listen to Dolly Parton’s book, Coat of Many Colors.
Give youngsters a change to discuss similarities and differences between the two books and the lessons these books teach.
- Explain that Dolly actually wrote this song, Coat of Many Colors, before she wrote the picture book, then play the song for everyone to enjoy.
