We’ve turned the calendar to September and in most areas, children are back to school. Whether you are sending a preschool child off for the first time, have a youngster stepping into first grade, high school or college and every age in between, emotions surge. Parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles understand the passage of time. Wherever your child is on this journey, I wish them a wonderful year.
During my years in Education and even as a retiree, parents often ask what is the best thing they can do to support their child’s academic experience. My answer never changes…”Read aloud on a regular basis.” Repeatedly, I’ve seen youngsters thrive and overcome challenges (both academically and emotionally) when parents (and teachers) establish a regular read-aloud routine.
Personally, I have found that information usually leads to motivation for me. No doubt you are familiar with many of the perks of reading aloud…increased background knowledge, vocabulary, decoding skills, to name a few. In addition, story time can create a special bond, building emotional connection and lasting memories.
There are many wonderful books touting the benefits of reading. As a new school year begins, may I suggest a few books that are chock full of information that hopefully will motivate you to consider fitting story time into your home life. To me, reading aloud is the “magic bullet” that can transform lives. Check out these books and discover why I say that with great confidence.
Here are three of my favorites…
