Did you know that September is “Library Sign-Up Month?” That makes sense to me. Schools open, learning begins in earnest, and there’s no better place to foster learning and love of literacy than the library. From the time I learned to read, I loved books but we didn’t have a local library. If my large, parochial school had a library, I never saw it (and I was there for eight years!)

Today, teachers are expected to build a classroom library, but in all eight years of elementary school, I only remember my third grade teacher, Miss Catherine, offering us a small, three shelf library where we could borrow books. Miss Catherine was a savvy woman, stocking this special spot with plenty of Nancy Drew mysteries and children’s classics like The Wind in the Willows and Winnie the Pooh. Every Monday, I rushed to select a book to read that week. By the end of the year, I was an avid reader.

When I was in sixth grade, a miracle occurred! A spacious, new library, that included a Children’s Section opened in our community. It was like a dream. Each week, my two best friends and I walked over a mile, excited to stock up on free books.

Through every phase of my life, libraries have held a special attraction. I have fond memories of taking our little ones to the library, doing research at my college library, and even checking out libraries when we vacationed. As a retiree, I’ve found not only books, but wonderful programs that have introduced me to authors and fostered my personal writing.

Belonging to a library and planning frequent visits is one of the best gifts you can give yourself and your children. Owning a library card is like owning a ticket to the world. Children delight in having their own card and choosing books of interest for themselves. September is a busy month, but I’m hoping this little reminder prompts you to visit a nearby library and get yourself and your kids a card if you don’t already have one. I promise, this outing will be worth your time.

Visiting a library is an inexpensive treat and an invaluable experience for you and your family. “B Sharp” is this year’s theme for library month. Get in the rhythm of reading. You won’t regret it!
